twoapennything: "Dear Boss" Letter from Jack the Ripper to Scotland Yard - 1888 (Christmas - Red Ornaments)
[personal profile] twoapennything

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?

- 120+ minute cardio workouts
- Did not recognize myself in a photograph because of weight loss
- Attended an election rally (for Barack Obama - 10/26/08) wtih 100,000+ people
- Lived in a city that hosted a major political event (Democratic Natl. Convention 2008)
- Saw The Cure live at Red Rocks - sweet!
- Got called for jury duty (they ended up not needing any jurors the week I was summoned)
- Arrested a probationer at his very first probation meeting for violating his probation by stealing my iPod from my desk while I was grabbing a form from the printer -- term and condition #1 states You shall not violate any local, state or federal law. Stealing your probation officer's iPod is in fact a crime.
- Had a blood transfusion

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Okay, so I never make formal New Year's resolutions because I never keep them. Last year I decided to set some goals regarding finances. Let's just say I am reverting to my previous standard of not setting formal goals. Because Oh. My. GOD. 2008 was terrible as far as money goes, I achieved none of my goals, and I feel like a right sorry ass about it. Granted, a lot of this was due to 1) unexpected injury and illness which affected my pay and 2) several unexpected emergency expenses. But still. It was very disappointing.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

4. Did anyone close to you die?

5. What countries did you visit?

Alas, I did no traveling in 2008.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?

I really really need some semblance of calm and stability in 2009. 2008 was just insane and full of unexpected stress, that affected every aspect of my life. I want to feel balanced again, and secure.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched in your memory?

Election Day, for sure ♥ 11/4/08 - Obama FTW! June 14th -- GI bleed.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

God, probably remaining employed, seeing as I missed about 400 hours of work in 2008 due to injury/illness.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I could go on and on here about all the ridiculously insane obstacles that I had to navigate this year, which were challenging to me. But, you know? I'm not going to demean myself by listing out all the areas where I might have done better, because, frankly, I was completely overwhelmed in 2008 by having to deal with significant health problems that completely impacted every other aspect of my life: mothering, being a wife, my career, finances, travel, etc. Instead, I'm going to kind of pat myself on the back for handling as much as I did, as well as I did. It was not my best year. But I tried to remain tenacious and I did the best that I could.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

So, so much. Yes. UGH.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Man, nothing spectacular comes to mind. I will say that it was cool to be able to buy clothing in the regular womens sizes again, and not have to buy in the plus sizes.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Barack Obama - very classy. Brenden Foster - very sweet.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Well, I kind of do "appalling and depressing behavior" for a living, so my tolerance is higher than most peoples'.

14. Where did most of your money go?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

I was super excited that Shawn got a new job that not only brought him a pay increase, but is also one that he absolutely loves. I was thrilled to lose a tremendous amount of weight in 2008 and to begin exercising again. I was excited to be given the opportunity to develop a specialized caseload at work, specifically for mentally ill female offenders. I was unbelievably excited by the election of Barack Obama to the presidency! I was excited to get a new dog for our family, Larry the Poodle. I was excited to get back in touch with friends from my Attachment Parenting mailing list -- I'd been off the list for a few years. As well, I was excited to have the chance to see my local AP Mamas group more in 2008 and, again, feel more connected to some absolutely fabulous, smart and thoughtful friends. I was excited for several TV shows: Mad Men, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate: Atlantis and Friday Night Lights.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

Illusion by Ashbury Heights

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? It was a stressful year. I was in better spirits going into 2008 than I am going into 2009. That said, it's not like I'm unhappy. 2008 was just a stressful year.
ii. richer or poorer? Richer, technically. But I feel poorer.
iii. thinner or fatter? Thinner! Yay!

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

I wish I had done more blogging. I really did not blog much this year at all.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

I wish I had not had so much illness and injury in 2008.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

With family ♥

21. How will you be spending New Years?

I spent it at home, which is typical for me. I never got into the habit of going out for New Year's Eve. I usually make a nice dinner -- steak and lobster -- although this year I ended up going with shrimp and cocktail sauce and a bunch of fancy hor d'ouerves.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?

Over and over again ♥

23. How many one-night stands?

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Mad Men on AMC.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

There is nobody that I know that I hate.

26. What was the best book you read?

Hmm. I think I enjoyed The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao the most this year.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I don't feel I discovered any music this year that absolutely amazed me. I suppose, in a roundabout way, getting eMule to work with Vista was my greatest musical discovery ;)

28. What did you want and get?

2008 was not a year of major or interesting purchases for me.

29. What did you want and not get?

Again, this was not my focus in 2008.

30. What was your favorite film of the year?

Hmm. I'm so not a movie person. The last movie I saw in the theater was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and that was in 2007.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 39 this year and, as usual, I did nothing of interest for my birthday. I know this sounds all Woe and Wah, but I have informed Shawn that I think it's important that ALL birthdays in the family are recognized -- that means that I should not plan my own birthday celebration. Shawn has assured me that he will get better at this :D

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

If my bathtub worked. I'm tired of only showers!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

As summed up in a greeting card I found at Papyrus: I wear black because they haven't invented a darker color yet. Yep. That's about it.

34. What kept you sane?

Friends, family, Wheat Thins, Zofran, the television, my dogs, my iPod, exercise and Percocet.

35. What celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Obama, definitely!

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Just . . . the whole election. Seriously.

37. Who did you miss?

My friend Amy.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Hmm, I can't say I met anyone in 2008 who became a bonafide friend.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.

Um, Zoloft + Diet Mountain Dew = Breakfast of Champions!

Very interesting meme and answers! I feel the same about birthdays, actually. I've been known to get more excited about other people's birthdays than they themselves are.

Your weight loss has been such an inspiration, especially because you've done a lot of sickness and injury this year. You've managed to soldier on. Congrats!

Happy New Year!

Happy 2009!

I agree, sometimes handling a really stressful time and coming out stronger is more valuable in the long run than a ton of excitement. And I think you did that admirably.

Here's to a better year this year for all of us.
