Favorite Classic or Retro Product?

What is your favorite classic or retro product? It can be any kind of product -- food, cosmetic, clothing. Mine is classic Pond's Cold Cream. It reminds me of sitting and watching my mother get ready for an evening out -- as does the scent of Chanel No. 5 -- and I still use it to this day. The main ingredients are mineral oil and beeswax, which may be suspect to some, but honestly I haven't found a product yet that makes my skin feel as smooth and soft as Pond's, and believe me I've tried inumerous different brands. Pond's is also a great makeup remover for me.

Is anyone else watching Mad Men on AMC? Speaking of retro.

I love:

Chocolate lip gloss from Avon
Those magic markers that had fruit smells (OMG crack!)
Noxzema - tho' now only on sunburns
Strawberry Shortcake scents - the VCR cases are heavenly to smell at work, when they're new
J&J Baby Oil
Original scent Skin So Soft
Coke/Dr. Pepper made from real cane syrup, in bottles
Maypo cereal
Fashion Plates
The Electric Company/3-2-1 Contact

Sometimes I hit up the Mexican grocery stores here for real sugar Coke. It's definitely better. Boylan's makes some nice sodas that use cane sugar, if you can find it. Their cola is good but my particular fav is their birch beer (the redder colored one). Why, yes, I do like soda!

Catching up here . . .

Ooo, those are all excellent retro items! Avon used to make these little plastic animal pins, that had little compartments that opened up to reveal honeysuckle-scented perfume, that was the consistency of lip balm. Do you remember that stuff? There was a little skunk, I remember, and they were kind of collectible.

Yes, the Mister Sketch markers! We still use those for our probation classes and everyone can't help themselves -- they sniff the pens all the time.

I remember Bonnie Bell Dr. Pepper lip stuff and Lip Smackers that came in little tins.

- +SWATCH+ watches with the scented bands
- Tinkerbell perfume/lotion/shampoo that came in a little set
- Slime
- 10-0-9 face stuff, I think by Bonnie Bell? It was like Sea Breeze.
- Apple flavored Slice soda
- Bubble gum RECORDS that came in little record sleeves of popular hits

Sometimes I wish I could go back and live in the 70s and 80s respectively for like a week. I'd collect so much stuff!

Catching up on comments

Oh man, Tinkerbell sets were a staple of Christmas at our house!

And 10-0-9 I blame for all the zits I had! That stuff was like, God, I don't even know - it probably could remove rust from car bumpers!

I still buy Dr. Pepper Bonne Bell lip gloss. It's just the done thing. :D

Pond's cold cream is a good one. My maternal grandmother uses it religiously and it makes me think of her. It's a bit too heavy/greasy for me. I need something that cleans the dirt and oil off my face, and my makeup is generally gone by the end of the day anyway.

My fave classic product is Oil of Olay. My grandma uses that too, and it makes me think of her. She's used it every day for probably over 40 years (or however old it is) and she swears by it. I use it too, sometimes, but the oil free version, obviously. :D

Haha - glad I read comments first, as Oil of Olay is my favorite classic too. I love the smell of it, and it always reminds me of being in grandma's bedroom with her as she got ready for church. :)

So if it's Oil-free Oil of Olay, is it just Olay?

*snickers* HA HA I guess you may be right!

I <3 OLAY!

Catching up...

It's definitely a heavy facial product and probably doesn't work for all skin types. I do love the scent, though.

Oil of Olay is definitely a great product. I've used it on and off over the years -- there was a period of time where it made me break out, but now that I think about it, I wonder if that was more hormonal than anything else.

It's got to be vacuum tubes (valves to the Brits) for my retro product. They are still made in a few places, though 99% of mine are vintage. And we all know vintage watts sound better than modern watts anyway.

[identity profile] twoapennything.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Vintage watts definitely rule. I still remember with fondness the system my parents had most of my childhood/teen years . . . it had such good sound! I don't think it was tubes, but it made in the late 70s and it lasted forever.

Vick's Vaporub. It really does work as well on me as an adult as it did when I was a kid.

Yes, Vicks is awesome! I have some in my medicine cabinet. Another retro medicine product that I always liked was St. Joseph's baby aspirin -- it had this specific orange flavor that reminds me of being young.
