twoapennything: "Dear Boss" Letter from Jack the Ripper to Scotland Yard - 1888 (London Telephone Box)

I do like to shop, as you all probably know by now. Yesterday the children and I went to the crack house Target to buy materials for Ariel's project on mythology. Then, we went to Borders and found this great book on Mythology for only $19.99

Okay, I ordered shoes from Zappos. Why? Why do I continue to do this? Perhaps it's the hope that someday -- SOMEDAY! -- I will find a pair of shoes that do not flay my feet open when I wear them, that aren't Crocs. I'm sure weight loss will help. But, anyway, I purchased these ballerina flats:

I have the perfect skirt that has both colors featured in the shoe in the fabric, and I anticipate wearing the skirt with opaque tights and some kind of wrap-around shirt. God help me, but the shoes come in red, too. (I did not order the red ones, although I was tempted!)

I also decided to try getting my groceries by home delivery, which I haven't done since 1999. Previously, the cost of delivery was 10% of the total bill, which could easily be like $25.00. I thought that was excessive, so I just stopped using the service. However, it's become popular, so now the cost of delivery is a $9.95 flat fee. I'm totally down with that. So, my groceries will be delivered tomorrow evening. Another advantage, I've found, is that when you order online, you are faced with the reality of how much stuff you are purchasing. I re-did my shopping list three times before submitting it, and doing so really gave me pause to consider what I truly needed, as opposed to things I was purchasing because they were on sale, thus "a good deal." My bill went down from $460 to $290 -- that's a huge difference. And I realized that I had shopped online in the same way I shop when hungry/tired/in a rush in the actual store itself. Many times I've purchased groceries that ended up going to waste just because something looked, or was, a good deal. It's not a good deal when you end up throwing it away. $290 is still a lot to spend on groceries and sundries (although we're a family of four), but we've run out of, like, everything -- I had to stock up.

$290 is what we run around here, too, when we're out of nearly everything. I anticipate a price very much near that when mom and I go on Tuesday; we have *nothing* in the house right now. (We're also a family of four, but we're basically four adults - my brother is the youngest and he's 15. It makes for very expensive grocery bills. :-P)

I'm trying to get better about budgeting -- there have been months where we've spent over $1000 on groceries and eating out, and that's just totally unacceptable. My kids don't eat excessively, but I'm sure that will change once they start really growing.

Cute shoes!

I've noticed the same thing about online shopping: I'll edit my list several times, just because I can see that running total of how much I'm spending, whereas at the actual store, once it's in my cart, it stays there. The only problem I've had is not really being able to gauge how much of something I'm buying by the listed size/weight. I ended up with a monstrous bag of shredded cheese that way recently, and I got so effing sick of quesadillas before it was gone. :)

Thanks! They arrived today and they actually fit. I want to try them on again to see if I need a half size up.

Yes, in reviewing my shopping list, I realized that I had a $20 pork roast... I was like, um, what? It must have been the size of an ox! So, I took that off, but it is a disadvantage when it comes to trying to accurately put in meat items.

I freeze shredded cheese quite a lot, actually, because we use so little cheese.

Oh god, Zappos, the bane of my existence. I just went there and saw that the Electra boots I'd been eyeing for ages were on sale at half price. *iz now proud owner of waist-high shiny PVC boots* *weeps* but also: YAY! XD

The shoes you got are really cute! I envy people who are able to wear flats -- I just trip all over myself. ;_;

Oh, God, I love buying things on clearance that I've been coveting for a long time! That's awesome!

Will you wear your boots to work?!

I think that flats are a good choice for persons like myself, who are short. If you buy the right kind, they can be extremely versatile and rather Audrey Hepburnesque, which is always FTW. IMO, the thing about getting flats is to purchase really excellent, stylish pairs that are hip fashion statements (without being nutty) in their own right. You know, I think taller, thinner women just look better in high heels. I always feel silly and out of my element in heels, although that's maybe because I've never EVER owned a pair that fit and didn't kill my feet.

Those are cute! I desperately need shoes - but daren't buy them online. I will not wear uncomfy shoes on a regular basis, so I MUST try them on first. And sending things back is so tedious. I've just been through that with an online clothing store and am now back to shopping in real stores.

Which is why my clothes are a bit haphazard, and I tend to wear one pair of shoes all the time, until they plain wear out. One day I'll wake up and love to shop and these problems will be instantly solved - I just know it. (Hey, never hurts to dream...)

We got veggies delivered for a while (one of those community-supported agriculture thingies), and it was very handy. I don't mind doing the grocery shopping though, provided it is *not* a family event.

I also have one pair of shoes that I wear 90% of the time -- Danskos. Ah, foot bliss.

I have always liked to shop, although the older I get the more of a chore it feels like than when I was younger.

We have those here, too -- food co-ops. Several of my friends are part of a co-op, but I've never tried them. I like the idea, though.

It's crazy how that stuff mounts up. We just got groceries after a month's hiatus--I think the last time we did was around Aug 23, and then we were away for three weeks after that, and spent $175. But then we were out of detergent and laundry booster and milk, and all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruit. I try so hard to control my eating, but if I haven't got things for breakfast, lunch, and snack right there, I'll reach for bad things at work.

I'm exactly the same way -- I had to figure out a standard breakfast that I could just shove into my bag and take with me. Otherwise, I, too, would end up in the cafe downstairs from my office, ordering pancakes and ham. My standard breakfast is either 1) a Slim Fast, a banana or apple and a yogurt or 2) 2 packets of instant oatmeal and an apple or banana.

OMG! Are you watching Tim's Guide to Style? I'm actually going to review it in my next post -- I like it, mostly, but have a few nitpicks.

AND I HAVE A MACY'S ACCOUNT :> Have card, will charge.

Ooo, a surprise, lovely! Thank you :) (I will mention, though, that I did buy his book over the weekend already -- just an FYI -- ALTHOUGH I LOVE PRESENTS!!!! :D )
